Garbbarakshambigai Temple
 Garbbarakshambigai
Fertility Centre (P) Ltd.
          (GFC)

Among the numerous shrines in Thanjavur (Tanjore) District, the temple at Thirukkarugavur, near Papanasam, is unique in its importance. It is a Siva temple dedicated to Sri Mullaivananathar and Sri Karbharakshambikai. Appar, Sundarar and Sambandar, the three among the four Nayanmars, have celebrated the glory of this temple in soul stirring verses of rare beauty and charm.

The one remarkable feature which distinguishes this temple from innumerable other shrines of our land is that the Goddess Sri Karbharakshambikai (an aspect of Sri Parvathi) here, vouchsafes safety to women during pregnancy and child birth. The name of the Sthalam 'Thirukkarugavur' (meaning a place that protects the womb) itself brings out the significance of the temple.

The Sthalapuranas (history of the site), which are in Tamil and Sanskrit, are preserved in manuscript forms and shows the antiquity of the temple.
They give a detailed account of the origin of temple. It would suffice to recount the story of Sage Nidhruva and his wife Vedika as it relates to circumstances in which Parvati took the form of Sri Karbharakshambikai in order to give special protection to women during pregnancy. The story is that Sage Nidhruva was living here with his wife Vedhika. One day when Sage Nidhruva was away, Sage Urdhvapada happened to visit the place. Vedhika was then alone and in advanced state of pregnancy. So, she unwittingly failed to offer due hospitality to the guest. Urdhvapada unaware of her difficulties got incensed at her conduct and landed a cruel curse upon her, as a result of which poor Vedhika was visited with foul diseases, which began to eat in to the very vitals of not only herself but also the child in the womb. The helpless Vedika fervently prayed for relief to Goddess Parvathi who in the plentitude of Her mercy appeared before Vedhika in the form of Sri Karbharakshambikai totally erased the effect of the curse and saved Vedhika.

The story goes that the Goddess offered protection to the embryo by keeping it in a divine pot till it bloomed in to a full-fledged child. Vedhika over-whelmed with joy, fell at the feet of Sri Karbharakshambikai and prayed that Ambika should take a permanent abode at the place and continue to offer protection to future generations of women also. Thus we find the prayer
being fulfilled even to this day at this holy place.

Garbba Ratchambigai Seva Nilayam

Thirukkarugavur is a small yet upcoming village. Garbba Ratchambigai Seva Nilayam, located right next to the temple boundaries offers a place to stay for free. Patrons of the temple who would like to stay at the Seva Nilayam can approach the caretaker on site. The Seva Nilayam can be used as a place to rest, wash up and also do a little bit of cooking.

Dr.Jayam Kannan started her career at Primary Health Center 10 kms from the temple at Thirukkarugavur. The year 1971-72 was the period of intense family planning drive and on a day when Dr. Jayam Kannan went to Thirukkarugavur, the temple was typical of a small village temple. There, she got the intuition and a message while praying that she would do something in the name of the Goddess Sri Garbbarakshambigai. Being an MBBS doctor, she did not understand the message given at that time. But after the birth of the Louis Brown, the first test tube baby, Dr. Jayam Kannan got interested in management of childless couples. In 1990, she understood the message given to her by the Goddess. Thereafter, she left her regular practice of deliveries and routine work of a gynaecologist. She started in-depth training and established the G.F.C. (P) Ltd. in 1992 at Trichy. The first baby was born in 1993 to a couple of 63-year-old male and 33-year-old female. The center was shifted to Chennai as servicing of the equipment required extensive attention, which was difficult to manage at a non-metropolitan center. And thereafter, Dr. Arunagiri who was the classmate of Dr. Jayam Kannan lent a lot of support to establish the center at Chennai. The first computer equipment for check up of the men – the CASA machine was purchased and Dr. Arunagiri started his extensive work on men with fertility problems.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jayam Kannan's daughter Priya, who showed keen interest in doing medicine, was willing to update herself on test tube baby procedures. Dr.Priya Kannan took appropriate training and qualified for two masters, one in reproduction and genetics and the second in clinical embryology. She returned to India from Australia after pursuing the masters. From February 2003, the infertility center which was at a slow speed started working up fast with purchase of latest computerized ICSI machine, the first of its kind in India from Eppendorf Company. The other supports for test tube baby procedures such as Endoscopy, the Endocrine Testing Laboratory and Genetic Laboratory were already in full swing. Hence, with the addition of the masterly activity of Dr. Priya Kannan, records could be set by G.F.C.

The specialty of G.F.C. lies in the fact that we incorporate alternate medical systems such as Siddha, thanks to the efficient services rendered by Late Dr. Kannan who was the Chairman of the Siddha Council and was also a personal physician of past Presidents of India, Dr. Venkatraman and Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma.
